Originating from the Dutch word “pije”, Pea coats owe their popularity to the European sailors and American Navy. Designed as double-breasted, the coat is typically made from wool and is warm enough. They look elegant when teamed with a good hat and matching scarf or muffler. Many people however credit the British navy for putting these coats on the map. They definitely notched up the sexy-quotient, when their sailors wore their Pea coats and moved about town.

In all fairness, Pea coats are very versatile. They easily pass-off as corporate wear and you can either dress up or down, and wear them as casual wear also. The most importing thing about the coat is its fitting. A sloppy cut will make you look like an oversized giant, as the double-breasted coat can look awkward when not properly worn. Keeping these pointers in mind, we have here the Mission Workshop Bridgeman LT Softshell Pea Coat. The highlight of the coat is its water-repellent (DWR) finish, making them the perfect companion during a drizzle or light rain. Personally, I’d recommend teaming the Pea coat with jeans, khakis or wool trousers. And they look extremely classy when combined with a monotone sweater or turtlenecks. I’m on the fence with wearing a dress shirt underneath, but you can definitely look at wearing leather boots or canvas sneakers as footwear.

Since they are crafted from 92% nylon – 8% elastane, and not pure wool, you may have to layer-up underneath in bitter-cold temperatures. However, the PrimaLoft® Gold Active Insulation will keep you warm enough on a cold day. Just pull up the lapel in to a high collar when it gets too nippy. The coat is cut with two zippered hand pockets and an exclusive knife pocket. Completing the design is a chest pocket for extra convenience. The asymmetric paneling teamed with design detailing add character to the coat. What I like about the coat is that since it isn’t made from pure wool, its easier to maintain and manage the washing. The single-layer high-performance Schoeller softshell fabric certainly helps in the construction. Lastly, the breathable 4-way stretch fabric helps in making the Bridgeman LT Softshell Pea Coat an easy commute coat.
