Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak collection gets some new booty this year. Announced at the SIHH 2019, the watchmakers are delighting watch lovers with The Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph in a charming 38 mm size. The sweet spot in terms of wrist real-estate, the collection has a history associated with its size. Around 2012, the 39 mm watches were replaced by the 41 mm watches. For sure this size doesn’t sound too big, but when you compare it to the recent 37 mm Royal Oak models, both extremes of the opposite spectrum need a balance, and 38 mm is just that.
To be available in four different variations that are distinct and the new watches are worthy of being F. Piguet-powered Royal Oak Chronos. Crafted in in steel and rose gold primarily – two in steel and two in rose gold, the timepieces are distinct thanks to the combination of white, grey and silver dials. Housing the Caliber 2385 (Frédéric Piguet 1185 base), the new watches don’t bring significant changes to the powerhouses that beat within. Colors and size are the only two significant features that dictate the update, however we should not belittle this, because it’s an important one.
While all of them look ravishing, if I had to pick one for a review, I would like to toy with the stainless steel with silver-toned dial and blue sub-registers. The other combinations of: stainless steel with ruthenium dial and rhodium-toned sub-registers; rose gold with white dial and rose gold sub-registers and rose gold with silver-toned dial and silver-toned sub-registers, are also pretty impressive, but for me this watch stands out the most. As mentioned earlier, under the hood we find a Caliber 2385 (Frédéric Piguet 1185 base) and with its automatic winding, the movement powers the watch for forty hours straight. Water resistance is 50 meters and this is good enough for the moment. The Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph is an iconic watch, and it’s nice to see it evolve to a style statement. For this year’s SIHH Audemars Piguet has not announced any new movement, but a collection like this suffices.
